Former U.S. President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s upcoming elections on October 27. Trump warned that a change in leadership could escalate Washington’s involvement in managing security issues related to Iran, a point he made in a statement on his Truth Social platform.
Trump’s endorsement underscores the close relationship he maintains with Netanyahu, whom he praised for his leadership and cooperation with the United States. Trump suggested that if Israeli voters opt for a different leader, the United States might have to shoulder a greater burden in addressing the challenges posed by Iran.
This endorsement arrives at a pivotal moment for Netanyahu, who faces significant political hurdles, including criticism over Israel’s security strategies, the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and the country’s international reputation. The Gaza conflict has attracted widespread international scrutiny, with Palestinian authorities reporting substantial casualties and extensive damage to civilian infrastructure since hostilities began in October 2023.
Adding to Netanyahu’s challenges, in November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for him and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Separately, the International Court of Justice is examining a case brought by South Africa that accuses Israel of violating the Genocide Convention.
Trump’s backing introduces a significant international aspect to the Israeli election campaign, highlighting the enduring ties between the former U.S. administration and Netanyahu. As Israel prepares for its elections, Trump’s statements may influence voters’ perceptions of the potential implications of a leadership change on the country’s security and diplomatic relations.
