US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff engaged in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday, aiming to advance efforts toward resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. This visit came on the heels of their meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow just a day prior. Witkoff described the conversation with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” expressing optimism for upcoming broader talks that might include the US, Ukraine, and European nations.
In a show of international collaboration, national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany briefly joined the meeting in Kyiv. President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s desire to pursue trilateral discussions involving the US and European allies as part of the peace negotiation strategy. He also highlighted the necessity for sustained Western support as Ukraine braces for another challenging winter. Key areas of focus include bolstering air defense systems, securing energy assistance, and augmenting supplies of US liquefied natural gas.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, peace negotiations remain deadlocked, primarily due to severe disagreements over territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Prior discussions have revolved around a 20-point peace plan devised by Washington and Kyiv, although both Russia and Ukraine have yet to find common ground on several pivotal issues.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains dire, with Russian strikes continuing to wreak havoc across Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported at least eight fatalities and 69 injuries from attacks in the past 24 hours. Kyiv has been under persistent drone assaults, and the country faces a shortage of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles. As the conflict nears its fifth year, Ukrainian authorities are increasingly concerned about potential escalations in attacks on energy infrastructure and the likelihood of intensified assaults during the winter months.
